Entry signal — what decides who wins here
One thing must be trueEntry turns on a single condition that can be named and tested before much is spent. Clear it and this becomes an execution question; fail it and no amount of operating skill helps.
Displace an incumbent the screen found well defended — payments attached to the workflow, data that does not leave, a contract that renews itself. Share here means giving a buyer a reason to break something that currently works, which is a higher bar than being better.
Measured, not forecast: the share of US establishments opening in one year that were still active later. It counts good operators and bad ones together, which is exactly why it is the honest answer to “what are the odds”. It is for the whole sector rather than this market, and the ten-year figure comes from an older cohort because no younger one has reached ten years.
This is not a probability of success, and it is not a verdict on you. No survival probability is published per market, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the bar reads is how much of the outcome sits inside an operator's control: green means the hurdles are ones a better operator clears, red means the binding constraint is capital, an asset or a permission rather than execution. Someone arriving with an advantage this screen did not assume can win a market shown in red.

The binding constraint — incumbent vulnerability
Squeezed between a free tier that runs universities and an HR suite that gives it away. Moodle and Open edX are institution-grade and cost nothing, which puts the floor at zero; above that, SAP SuccessFactors Learning, Workday Learning and Oracle ship learning inside the HR system that already holds the employee record. The listed independent, Docebo, is reported at around $140M of ARR [C, vendor] — a real business, and also the ceiling for what independence buys in this category. Market figures here are unusually unreliable: estimates of the 2025 LMS market run from $30.9B to a projected $100.7B by 2032 [C], a spread wide enough to be useless for planning.

The incumbent
Who owns this market and who is coming for it. Fields a screen never reached say so rather than guessing.
The field
Every vendor named on this record, and what each one discloses. Most disclose nothing, which is why the market is not sized.
Competitor set · 4 named · 0 disclose revenue
| Name | Revenue | Share | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| DoceboNASDAQ: DCBOC | not disclosed | — | Listed. Reported at around $140M ARR with roughly 3,500 clients [C, vendor material] — not read from a filing here |
| SAP SuccessFactors LearningNYSE: SAPC | not disclosed | — | No learning line reported; inside the HR suite |
| Workday LearningNASDAQ: WDAYC | not disclosed | — | Never broken out from the HCM subscription |
| Cornerstone OnDemandC | not disclosed | — | Private since its 2021 take-private; no figures published |
Nobody here publishes revenue. The market is not sized for that reason — an estimate built on nothing would only look like knowledge.
Startups & challengers
Newer and smaller vendors going at the incumbent — funded challengers first. Named, not researched to the depth of the field above; a company with a page here links to it.

The most deployed LMS in the world; runs national education systems as well as corporate training
The platform behind edX; built for scale rather than for departments
Instructure's core is open source; widely used in higher education
Lightweight; strong in francophone and Latin American deployments
This is the clearest open-source price floor in the generic set. Moodle and Open edX run national education systems, so the free tier is not a toy — the paid vendors sell administration, reporting and compliance evidence rather than the ability to deliver a course.
Evidence
Evidence. Market size UNVERIFIED — the circulating market estimates ($30.9B in 2025, $100.7B by 2032) come from research publishers [C] and the spread is wide enough that they are reported here as unreliable rather than used. Docebo's ARR and client count are from vendor material [C] and were not read from its filings. Verify before acting.
