The research industry, and where this research sits
A map of the organisations people mean when they say 'market research': advisory firms, financial data and ratings houses, consumer and web-traffic researchers, startup databases, and the free government sources underneath much of it. For each one: who owns it, how big it is, what it sells, how it is priced and who buys it. Revenue for US-listed companies comes from their latest annual SEC filing. Several have changed hands recently: Semrush (and the Exploding Topics service it owned) now belongs to Adobe, IDC is owned by Blackstone, and the company at insiderone.com is a marketing platform, not a research firm. Outside North America, it lists the official sources for the UK, Ireland, the EU, Australia and New Zealand: statistics offices, business counts, company registers, labour data, central banks and the crosswalk from each industry code to NAICS. The main point: the paid firms sell access (seats, subscriptions, analysts, custom surveys), while much of the underlying industry data is free from statistics agencies.

The UK is the easiest market to extend to: free counts by 4-digit SIC, size band and local authority, a free company register with filed accounts in machine-readable form, and published SIC–NACE–ISIC links; the one gap is that there is no official SIC-to-NAICS table, so mapping runs through ISIC.

Looked for and not found
Claims this page would have made if a source could be opened. They are left out rather than guessed.
- IDC's revenue: IDC is private under Blackstone and publishes no revenue; none found in a credible outlet, so omitted. IDC's About page does not name its owner. Ownership is based on the 2021 IDG announcement; no later sale was found.
- CB Insights, Crunchbase and Dealroom revenue: none reported by the companies. Third-party estimates (for example, $79.8M for CB Insights) were found only in estimate aggregators and not used.
- Twilio Segment's own revenue: Twilio stopped reporting Segment separately in Q3 2025, so only Twilio's total is given.
- Exploding Topics' purchase price: undisclosed. Its ownership rests on a founder announcement and trade press (tier C). No separate filing was found.
- Datarails' ~$550M valuation comes from press coverage of the Series C, not from the company's own release.
- Thomson Reuters: the size of Woodbridge's controlling stake was not checked in the 40-F text, so no percentage is given.
- Pricing descriptions (seats, freemium, per project) come from company websites and filings as of September 2026. List prices are mostly unpublished and were not collected.
- No official UK SIC ↔ NAICS or ANZSIC ↔ NAICS concordance was found; the mapping must go through ISIC Rev. 4 (UNSD tables).
- US Census's NAICS concordance page (census.gov/naics) blocked automated access (403), so a 2022 NAICS ↔ ISIC Rev. 4 table could not be confirmed; the 2017 version on the UNSD site was opened.
- Whether ABS/Stats NZ have begun a formal ANZSIC 2006 review: not found on the pages opened.
- CRO (Ireland) and ASIC document fees: the paid status of filed accounts is from general knowledge; neither fee page was opened.
- The claim that UK SIC 2007 follows NACE Rev. 2 to 4 digits is standard but was not stated on the ONS pages opened.
