Customer Engagement Platforms
Entry signal — what decides who wins here
One thing must be trueEntry turns on a single condition that can be named and tested before much is spent. Clear it and this becomes an execution question; fail it and no amount of operating skill helps.
Displace an incumbent the screen found well defended — payments attached to the workflow, data that does not leave, a contract that renews itself. Share here means giving a buyer a reason to break something that currently works, which is a higher bar than being better.
Measured, not forecast: the share of US establishments opening in one year that were still active later. It counts good operators and bad ones together, which is exactly why it is the honest answer to “what are the odds”. It is for the whole sector rather than this market, and the ten-year figure comes from an older cohort because no younger one has reached ten years.
This is not a probability of success, and it is not a verdict on you. No survival probability is published per market, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the bar reads is how much of the outcome sits inside an operator's control: green means the hurdles are ones a better operator clears, red means the binding constraint is capital, an asset or a permission rather than execution. Someone arriving with an advantage this screen did not assume can win a market shown in red.

The binding constraint — incumbent vulnerability
The engagement layer is owned by the two marketing suites and a public pure-play, and the AI agent is arriving inside all of them at once. This record covers the software a consumer brand uses to message its own users across push, in-app, email, SMS and in-app chat: cross-channel engagement suites (Braze, Iterable, MoEngage, CleverTap, Insider One, OneSignal, Airship, Klaviyo, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Adobe Journey Optimizer, Twilio Segment) and in-app chat/messaging APIs (Sendbird, Stream). It is not the contact centre (NiCE, Five9, Genesys: agent desktops, voice queues, workforce management — see the 5614 record), and not team chat or the website support widget (Intercom, Zendesk, LiveChat, Tidio — see the 541514 team-chat record). Salesforce reports $5.428B of Agentforce Marketing and Agentforce Commerce revenue for fiscal 2026, up 3% [A, 10-K]; Adobe reports $5.86B of Digital Experience revenue for fiscal 2025, up 9% [A, 10-K]. Both lines include far more than engagement messaging, so neither is a market share. Below them, Braze grew revenue 24.4% to $738.2M in the year to 2026-01-31 with 2,609 customers [A, 10-K], and Klaviyo grew to $1.234B in 2025 with over 193,000 customers and NRR of 110% [A, 10-K]. Each names the other as a competitor, alongside Adobe and Salesforce [A]. Pricing is a seat-free usage meter, and it is under pressure. Braze bills an upfront commitment for monthly active users, messaging volume, platform access and add-ons, and says customers are renewing 'at lower subscription levels' and that it 'may need to reduce prices or change our pricing model' [A, 10-K]. Its gross margin fell from 69.1% to 67.1% as third-party messaging fees rose $25.2M [A]. Klaviyo prices on active-profile tiers from a free plan (250 profiles) and $20 a month [C, vendor price list]; OneSignal starts free and at $19 a month [C, vendor]. The AI agent is the new wedge, and every incumbent already ships one. Sendbird, the in-app chat API vendor, relaunched as an AI customer-experience company: Delight.ai, launched 2025-11-18, is 'a branded artificial intelligence concierge' across in-app chat, voice, SMS, email and social [B, destinationCRM], and in May 2026 it added Agent Steward, Trust OS 2.0 and Voice 2.0 [C, vendor release]. But Klaviyo now sells a Marketing Agent and a Customer Agent for '24/7 support and selling' [A, 10-K], Braze paid $303.2M for OfferFit (now AI Decisioning Studio) in June 2025 [A, 10-K], MoEngage is spending its $100M round on its Merlin AI agents [C, vendor release], and Salesforce has renamed its marketing line Agentforce [A]. A newcomer would be selling the agent layer to buyers whose engagement vendor already includes it. Incumbent vulnerability decides it.

The incumbent
Who owns this market and who is coming for it. Fields a screen never reached say so rather than guessing.
Market size, derived
Built from the competitor set upward rather than quoted from a forecast. Published TAMs in these categories are frequently reverse-engineered from each other, so any published figure is checked against the vendor arithmetic rather than trusted on its own.
Disclosed revenue from 4 of 12 named vendors. The market is at least this large.
No vendor has both a disclosed revenue and a published share.
Only a revenue floor is known — the true market is larger by whatever the undisclosed vendors earn.

Open source · none — there is no price floor
No open-source engagement project was opened in this pass, so the free tier here is the vendors' own free plans (Klaviyo, OneSignal), not self-hosted code. Open-source alternatives exist in marketing automation and notifications but their adoption is UNVERIFIED. Delivery still costs money per message through carriers and email providers whichever software sends it.
A usage-metered category where the two suites hold the enterprise, two public pure-plays hold mobile-first and e-commerce brands, and a funded private tier (Iterable, MoEngage, Insider One, CleverTap, OneSignal, Airship) fights for the rest. In-app chat APIs (Sendbird, Stream) are a separate developer-bought layer now pivoting into AI customer agents.
Evidence
Evidence. Market size UNVERIFIED — no category figure from a primary source was used, and neither Salesforce nor Adobe breaks engagement out of a wider line. Tier A, opened at www.sec.gov/Archives: Braze FY2026 10-K (revenue $738.2M, 2,609 customers, MAU-based pricing language, renewals at lower levels, OfferFit $303.2M, competitor list); Klaviyo 2025 10-K (revenue $1.234B, 193,000+ customers, NRR 110%, profile-tier pricing, Marketing and Customer Agents, competitor list); Salesforce FY2026 10-K (Agentforce Marketing and Agentforce Commerce $5.428B, +3%); Adobe FY2025 10-K (Digital Experience $5.86B, +9%; Journey Optimizer description); Twilio 2025 10-K (revenue $5.067B, Segment described, not broken out). Tier B: PYMNTS 2021-04-06 for Sendbird's $100M Series C at $1.05B led by Steadfast; destinationCRM 2025-11-18 for the Delight.ai launch; the Iterable CEO's Series E announcement hosted on silverlake.com (2021-06-15). Tier C, vendor releases and price lists: Sendbird release on PR Newswire 2026-05-07 (300M people, 7B conversations monthly, Agent Steward, investors); MoEngage release 2025-11-05; Insider One release 2024-11-01; CleverTap release 2022-08-10; OneSignal release 2022-09-01; Klaviyo and OneSignal pricing pages read 2026-10-27. Not opened: sendbird.com and delight.ai (robots.txt disallows ClaudeBot and anthropic-ai), Business Wire (robots.txt returned 403) — so Stream's Series B is not cited. Aggregator funding totals and valuations (Tracxn, Latka, Caplight, multiples.vc) were seen in search results only and are not used. Verify before acting.
