MDM — Master Data Management
Entry signal — what decides who wins here
One thing must be trueEntry turns on a single condition that can be named and tested before much is spent. Clear it and this becomes an execution question; fail it and no amount of operating skill helps.
Displace an incumbent the screen found well defended — payments attached to the workflow, data that does not leave, a contract that renews itself. Share here means giving a buyer a reason to break something that currently works, which is a higher bar than being better.
Measured, not forecast: the share of US establishments opening in one year that were still active later. It counts good operators and bad ones together, which is exactly why it is the honest answer to “what are the odds”. It is for the whole sector rather than this market, and the ten-year figure comes from an older cohort because no younger one has reached ten years.
This is not a probability of success, and it is not a verdict on you. No survival probability is published per market, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the bar reads is how much of the outcome sits inside an operator's control: green means the hurdles are ones a better operator clears, red means the binding constraint is capital, an asset or a permission rather than execution. Someone arriving with an advantage this screen did not assume can win a market shown in red.

The binding constraint — incumbent vulnerability
The two best-known MDM platforms were bought by the suites in the past eleven months, so a buyer's ERP or CRM vendor now sells the golden record too. Salesforce closed its $8B purchase of Informatica on 2025-11-18, and Informatica's MDM is moving inside Data 360; the company's homepage now reads 'Informatica from Salesforce' [B]. SAP announced it would buy Reltio on 2026-03-27 and closed on 2026-05-07 [A, SAP News]. SAP's Half-Year Report 2026 puts the consideration at €1,076M, mostly cash. It shows Reltio added €25M of revenue from May 7 to June 30 [A]. Its pro forma line implies about €78M for the whole half, roughly €155M a year. That run-rate is this record's own arithmetic from SAP's numbers, not a disclosed figure. SAP already sells Master Data Governance inside S/4HANA, and Oracle and IBM carry their own MDM products. The independents left are profitable, owner-funded, or owned by private-equity firms that can wait out a new entrant. Stibo Systems is foundation-owned and reported DKK 1.31B of revenue for fiscal 2025–26, up 6.0%, with SaaS up 17.0% and an 18.1% EBITDA margin [C, company release]. Pamlico Capital took a majority of Profisee in 2021 [B]. Providence Strategic Growth invested in Semarchy in 2020 [B; release not opened, 403]. Bain Capital Tech Opportunities put $150M into Ataccama in 2022 [B]. Syndigo (Summit Partners and TJC) bought Riversand in 2021, and Precisely (Clearlake and TA) took over EnterWorks with Winshuttle the same year [C, company pages]. EBX, the former TIBCO EBX, is now its own Cloud Software Group brand, ON EBX [A, cloud.com]. None of these vendors is weak or leaving the market. Incumbent vulnerability decides it. Lock-in is the deepest of any horizontal category screened. The golden record carries years of match and survivorship rules, stewardship workflows and hierarchies, and every ERP, CRM and data warehouse downstream is wired to its IDs. Replacing it means rerunning entity resolution across the whole company. How this differs from its neighbours. PIM (417) governs one domain, product content for channels. MDM governs customers, suppliers, locations, assets and products together, and Stibo, Syndigo, Informatica and Pimcore appear on both records. PIM-side funding is not re-researched here. CRM (541514-crm) is a system of engagement whose records MDM reconciles. Financial data and credit analytics (5239) sells third-party reference data, while MDM governs a company's own data. Name clash: 'MDM' also means Mobile Device Management. That is a separate record, 541514-mdm-uem-mobile-device-and-endpoint-management, and nothing here concerns devices.

The incumbent
Who owns this market and who is coming for it. Fields a screen never reached say so rather than guessing.
Market size, derived
Built from the competitor set upward rather than quoted from a forecast. Published TAMs in these categories are frequently reverse-engineered from each other, so any published figure is checked against the vendor arithmetic rather than trusted on its own.
Disclosed revenue from 1 of 12 named vendors. The market is at least this large.
No vendor has both a disclosed revenue and a published share.
Only a revenue floor is known — the true market is larger by whatever the undisclosed vendors earn.

The free tier is thin and getting thinner. Talend retired its MDM Server at the end of 2024 and its open-source Studio on 2024-01-31. Pimcore left GPLv3 for a source-available licence in 2025. The fully open option that remains is a small German project.
Evidence
Evidence. Opened 2026-10-18. Tier A: SAP News 'SAP to Acquire Reltio' (2026-03-27; standalone availability 'for the foreseeable future'; Reltio becomes a core capability of SAP Business Data Cloud) and 'SAP Completes Acquisition of Reltio' (2026-05-07). SAP Half-Year Report 2026 (SEC 6-K exhibit 99.2), Note D.1: consideration €1,076M; 3% held before control; €25M revenue and about €-13M IFRS operating profit since acquisition; pro forma H1 revenue €19,485M against €19,432M reported; €701M goodwill. The roughly €78M H1 and €155M annual Reltio figures are this record's arithmetic on those lines and are not disclosed by SAP. Also: cloud.com, which lists ON EBX as a Cloud Software Group brand; Qlik's Talend MDM end-of-life notice and its Talend Open Studio retirement page; GitHub API for AtroCore (GPL-3.0, 239 stars) and Pimcore (3,878 stars). Tier B: Reltio's own release on the $120M Series E led by Brighton Park Capital (about $1.7B valuation, $237M total, 2021-11-04), opened as Crosslink Capital's repost. Pamlico Capital's release on its Profisee majority stake (2021-09-02). Ataccama's release on Bain Capital Tech Opportunities' $150M (2022-06-22), with BetaKit in search results. Semarchy–PSG (Business Wire, 2020-09-02) appeared in search results only; the page returned 403. Informatica's homepage 'Informatica from Salesforce', with deal terms carried from the 417 PIM record. Tier C: Stibo Systems' release of 2026-06-25 (DKK 1.31B, +6.0%; the annual report PDF was not opened). Syndigo's Riversand release (2021-05-27). Precisely's Winshuttle page; the Clearlake/TA backing is read from its press-release slug and search results. Semarchy's about page (founded Lyon 2011, Arizona HQ, more than 400 clients). NOT sourced: MDM market size is UNVERIFIED, since only research-publisher forecasts circulate and none is used. No vendor publishes market share. Tamr's roughly $69M total and CluedIn's funding appear only on aggregators and are left null. A US-dollar consideration for Reltio (about $1.26B) appeared only in a search summary and is not used. sap.com, oracle.com and tibco.com returned 403. SAP MDG's own product page could not be opened.
