Franchise onboarding SaaS — lead to signature to open, as a product
Entry signal — what decides who wins here
One thing must be trueEntry turns on a single condition that can be named and tested before much is spent. Clear it and this becomes an execution question; fail it and no amount of operating skill helps.
Widen the definition, or stack this niche with others. The prize as drawn will not carry a business on its own; it may still be worth owning as one line of several.
Measured, not forecast: the share of US establishments opening in one year that were still active later. It counts good operators and bad ones together, which is exactly why it is the honest answer to “what are the odds”. It is for the whole sector rather than this market, and the ten-year figure comes from an older cohort because no younger one has reached ten years.
This is not a probability of success, and it is not a verdict on you. No survival probability is published per market, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the bar reads is how much of the outcome sits inside an operator's control: green means the hurdles are ones a better operator clears, red means the binding constraint is capital, an asset or a permission rather than execution. Someone arriving with an advantage this screen did not assume can win a market shown in red.

The binding constraint — market size
Read either way, this is a module rather than a market, and the screen says so plainly instead of manufacturing a category. Taken as new-franchisee onboarding — lead to signature to open — the buyer is the franchisor alone and the event is episodic. County Business Patterns counts 2,729 US establishments with employees in NAICS 5331 for 2022 [A], and FranConnect alone claims nearly 1,500 brands [C, vendor]; across its whole customer base it claims 15,286 new units opened and 29,847 franchises sold a year, which works out to a low double-digit number of openings per brand per year [C, vendor]. There is no recurring artefact to hold between openings, and the capability already ships as one stage of the lifecycle suites the franchisor has bought — FranConnect, ClientTether and FranchiseSoft all sell franchise sales and opening workflow as part of the same subscription. Taken the other way — onboarding a new employee at a unit — it is a line item on a small monthly plan: Homebase lists employee onboarding alongside HR and compliance on an All-in-One tier at $120 per location per month [B, vendor price page], and Toast ships employee onboarding with its POS across approximately 164,000 locations [A, FY2025 10-K]. On the training-led reading the floor is zero, because Moodle and Open edX are free and the paid layer has already been consolidated into sales-enablement suites. A standalone entrant would be selling a column in somebody else's table. NAICS 5331 is a navigation anchor, not a claim about where this sits.

The field
Every vendor named on this record, and what each one discloses. Most disclose nothing, which is why the market is not sized.

| FranConnectC | not disclosed | — | Private; no revenue published. Vendor claims retrieved 2026-09-20: nearly 1,500 brands, 15,286 new units opened and 29,847 franchises sold annually across customer activity — Sells the whole lifecycle in seven stages; onboarding is two of them, never a separate purchase |
| ClientTetherC | not disclosed | — | Private; no revenue published, and no customer count could be read from the vendor site in this screen — Franchise sales and lead follow-up — the front half of onboarding, sold as CRM |
| FranchiseSoftC | not disclosed | — | Private; no revenue published — Low-cost franchisor suite aimed at emerging brands; onboarding bundled |
| NarangaC | not disclosed | — | Private; never published revenue, and now defunct, so none ever will be — Defunct. A long-standing franchise operations and CRM suite that is no longer trading; its website stopped resolving (checked 2026-09-20). Kept in the field because an entrant will still meet its installed base looking for a replacement — a departed vendor is a source of accounts, not a rival. |
| WisetailC | not disclosed | — | Private and owned by a strategic acquirer; no revenue line is published anywhere reachable, and no acquirer filing was opened in this screen — Franchise and multi-unit LMS — the training half of onboarding, sold as learning rather than as onboarding |
| Seismic (Lessonly)C | not disclosed | — | Private; no revenue published — Lessonly's absorption into a sales-enablement platform is the same consolidation pattern: training tools end up inside a bigger suite |
| ToastNYSE: TOSTA | not disclosed | — | Subscription services revenue of $936M inside total revenue of $6,153M for FY2025, with financial technology solutions at $5,037M, per the 10-K for the year ended 2025-12-31 filed 2026-02-18. No onboarding product line is broken out — Ships employee onboarding, scheduling and payroll with the POS at ~164,000 locations — the employee-onboarding reading of this market, already bundled |
Nobody here publishes revenue. The market is not sized for that reason — an estimate built on nothing would only look like knowledge.
Vendor landscape
Market leaders, the full paid field, and every open-source alternative. Where a free tier exists it is what sets the price floor, so it is analysis rather than an appendix.
Nearly 1,500 brands and tens of thousands of openings a year across its base, on vendor claims; private, no revenue [C]
~164,000 locations; onboarding bundled into a POS earning $5,037M on payments in FY2025 [A]
Employee onboarding included at $120 per location per month; free at one location [B, price page]
Paid field · 9 vendors
Franchise sales, development and openings as stages of one suite
Lead-to-signature follow-up, sold as CRM
The cheap end of the same suite
Site did not resolve on 2026-09-20; retained because it still competes for these accounts
Brand training delivered as an LMS
Where a standalone training tool ended up
The opening critical path, from the real-estate side
Employee onboarding bundled at $120 per location per month
Employee onboarding shipped with the terminal
Open source · 4 projects — the price floor
The training half of onboarding, free and two decades mature; hosted Moodle partners undercut every paid LMS
Course delivery at scale for nothing, with a real commercial hosting ecosystem
Recruitment, employee onboarding checklists and document workflow in a free ERP
The opening critical path is a project plan; this does it at no licence cost
The vendor field here is the same field as the compliance record, which is the finding. Nobody sells franchise onboarding on its own; it is stage two and three of a lifecycle suite, or a tab in an HR product. A landscape in which no pure-play exists is not a gap in the market — it is the market telling you the unit of sale is bigger than this.
Evidence
Evidence. Sourced: Toast's FY2025 10-K (year ended 2025-12-31, filed 2026-02-18), opened directly, for ~164,000 locations at 22% growth, subscription services revenue of $936M inside total revenue of $6,153M, financial technology solutions of $5,037M, and the product description confirming that employee onboarding, scheduling and payroll ship with the POS — no onboarding line is broken out, which is the tier-A point. Driven Brands FY2025 10-K (year ended 2025-12-27, filed 2026-05-19) for the multi-brand franchisor figures. Homebase's published price page, opened 2026-09-20, for the $120 per location per month All-in-One tier listing employee onboarding, HR and compliance, and the free single-location tier. FranConnect's site, opened the same day, for all its brand, lead, opening and franchise-sale counts — these are vendor marketing claims and are tiered C throughout; none is independently verifiable. Establishment counts are US County Business Patterns 2022 and Statistics Canada 33-10-0806-01 via this atlas's own data. IFA figures come from franchise.org and are trade-association advocacy numbers, tiered B. NOT sourced, and not estimated: no market size for franchise onboarding software is claimed, because no figure exists that is not a forecast-publisher product. ClientTether, FranchiseSoft, Naranga, Wisetail and Seismic are private and disclose nothing — that is the finding rather than a gap. Naranga's domain did not resolve on 2026-09-20; that is recorded as an observation and is NOT treated as evidence the business has ceased. Wisetail's ownership is stated without naming an acquirer because no filing was opened to confirm it. UNVERIFIED: the count of US franchise brands, and the per-brand opening rate implied by FranConnect's claims. Verify before acting. On tiering: vendor-published list prices are tier C, not B — the house scale reserves B for a reputable secondary source and puts vendor material at C. The prices were read from the vendors' own current price pages on 20 September 2026, so they are checkable; they are simply not independent. Naranga is defunct — operator knowledge, not a filing, so tier C; its site no longer resolves, which is consistent but is not itself proof.
