Measured, not forecast: the share of US establishments opening in one year that were still active later. It counts good operators and bad ones together, which is exactly why it is the honest answer to “what are the odds”. It is for the whole sector rather than this market, and the ten-year figure comes from an older cohort because no younger one has reached ten years.

No US figure is shown. County Business Patterns is coded to the 2017 US edition of NAICS; this code either does not exist there, names a different industry, or is outside the programme's coverage (most of agriculture, rail, postal and public administration are). A figure is attached only where both the code and the title agree.

How businesses here compete

The structural profile of subsector 337, which every industry beneath it inherits. This is analyst judgment from how the subsector is organised — not research into this industry, and not a measurement.

Custom cabinetry and millwork stay local because the product is built to a room. Commodity furniture lost to imports long ago.

Market screens and studies

Market-entry records filed along this branch of the hierarchy. A record at or beneath this code is about this industry; one above it is about something wider that contains it.

Screened one level up. Nothing is filed at this exact code; the screen for 3371 Household and institutional furniture and kitchen cabinet manufacturing covers it.

binding constraint: defensibility

The pre-screen called this group a candidate, and at the small end it is: 2,205 of 3,236 Canadian establishments have fewer than ten people. That end — the shop that builds to a room and lives on builder relationships — is already screened as Custom Cabinet & Millwork Shop (337), cut on distribution, and this record does not repeat it. What this record tests is the step up that a successful shop is tempted to take: a plant making stock or semi-custom cabinets, or household furniture, in volume for dealers, home centres and online retailers. The two halves fail differently, and both anchors are from filings. In cabinets, the volume tier is consolidating around scale. MasterBrand, the largest manufacturer of residential cabinets in North America, reported 2025 net sales of $2.7B, up 1.3% only because of an acquisition and pricing against a mid-single-digit market decline; net income fell to $26.7M from $125.9M and adjusted EBITDA margin to 10.9% from 13.5% — and its answer was a pending merger with American Woodmark, another of the largest [A]. In furniture, the volume tier is imported. Dorel Home, the Montreal-based ready-to-assemble furniture business, saw revenue fall 40.1% to US$309.4M in 2025 with an operating loss of US$93.9M, and exited its manufacturing and warehousing sites in Cornwall, Ontario and Montréal [A]. Nothing protects a mid-sized volume plant: it gives up the custom shop's one defence — the product is built to a site and cannot be imported — without reaching the purchasing scale and dealer coverage of a consolidator. Institutional furniture (337127), sold on specification to schools and healthcare, may behave differently and was not examined; nor was upholstery, where several Canadian makers persist.

Software serving this industry

The vertical software markets filed along the same branch — who sells to these businesses and who they would have to displace — and then the generic categories every business buys whatever it does.

No vertical software market has been recorded along this branch. What the subsector typically runs on: Cabinet design-to-manufacture, nesting and job costing.

Who works here

The occupations employed in Manufacturing, most concentrated in it first. The share is measured against the whole sector, not this industry — the published cross-tabulation stops there.

And the jobs every business has

Found across at least fourteen of the twenty sectors. But note the shape of this industry: 76% of establishments have fewer than ten employees, and at that size most of these roles are one person wearing several hats, or bought in from outside.
