Veneer, plywood and engineered wood product manufacturing
This industry group comprises establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing softwood and hardwood veneer and plywood; structural wood members, except lumber; and reconstituted wood panel products. Veneer is produced as a thin sheet of wood of uniform thickness by peeling or slicing logs. Plywood is produced by gluing and compressing together, three or more sheets of veneer, with the grain of alternate sheets usually laid crosswise. Structural wood members are made by laminating, joining and assembling wood components according to specified engineering design criteria. Reconstituted wood panel products are produced by processes involving pressure, adhesives and binders. The laminated products produced in this industry may have layers of materials other than wood. — Statistics Canada, NAICS 2022A

Size and shape
How many businesses there are and how small they are. Fragmentation is the first thing an entrant — or anyone selling software into this industry — needs to know, and it is one of the few things that is actually measured.
Canadian establishments by number of employeesA
Of 414 Canadian establishments with employees, 27% have fewer than ten — an industry where large establishments carry real weight.
Where they areA
Largest four provinces by establishment count. Establishments with employees only — sole operators with no payroll are not in this table, so in trades and personal services the true number of businesses is higher.
Measured, not forecast: the share of US establishments opening in one year that were still active later. It counts good operators and bad ones together, which is exactly why it is the honest answer to “what are the odds”. It is for the whole sector rather than this market, and the ten-year figure comes from an older cohort because no younger one has reached ten years.
How businesses here compete
The structural profile of subsector 321, which every industry beneath it inherits. This is analyst judgment from how the subsector is organised — not research into this industry, and not a measurement.
Sawmilling is a commodity tied to fibre supply. Value-added work — millwork, trusses, engineered components — is regional, freight-protected and more reachable.
- Who sets the price
- Lumber and panel commodity markets; builders for value-added products.
- The software it runs on
- Mill optimisation, inventory and log accounting.
